11 Must-Do Outdoor Spring Home Maintenance Tasks [Homeowners Checklist]

With warmer weather around the corner, now is the time to head outside and spring into action! Tackle these spring home maintenance tasks early and prevent any small problems from growing into big ones requiring repairs. Plus, keeping your home in tip-top shape will allow you to spend more time doing things you enjoy and less time doing home repairs!

Spring Home Maintenance Checklist

1. Clean gutters and downspouts

After the last frost has passed, it’s essential that your gutters and downspouts are cleaned and repaired. Clogged gutters can expose your trim and siding to water which will lead to rot if left untouched. If you plan to bring out the ladder and clean them yourself, make sure to do it safely.

Pro tip: If you want to avoid ever cleaning your gutters again, it could be beneficial to get gutter guards installed!

2. Inspect Siding/Home’s Exterior

Once winter storms have passed, carefully inspect the exterior of your home. If you had an ice dam, leaks, or other roof issues during the winter, now is the time to repair any damage it caused.

3. Inspect the roof

Cold temperatures can take a toll on a roof! Request a professional roof inspection in the spring to spot any small problems to keep them from turning into big repairs.

Call the roofing experts at Durashield Contracting! We offer free estimates and make the processes easy.

4. Check sprinkler and irrigation systems

Checking your sprinklers or irrigation systems early in the spring to save water and prevent costly leaks and repairs.

5. Inspect driveways and paths

The freezing and thawing of winter are rough on concrete, asphalt, and other outdoor materials. Walk around your property to look for visible signs of damage like cracks and breaks. If there are any minor cracks, visit your local home improvement store to pick up some crack filler to prevent them from getting any bigger.

6. Check windows and window screens

Check the inside and outside of your windows to make sure there is no damage from the winter. Aside from the obvious cracks, make sure to check along the bottom to ensure there is no moisture or signs of leaking windows.

While you’re at it, it’s also good to check the screens for any holes or tears. This will keep those pesky mosquitoes out when the weather gets warmer.

7. Check your sump pump

Spring is the prime time for flooding. If your home has a sump pump, make sure it is working properly. If your pump has a battery backup, make sure it is charged and ready to go!

8. Check batteries in smoke and carbon monoxide detector

Batteries usually need to be replaced twice a year.

9. Check and Reseal Exterior Woodwork

Check wood deck, railings, and window seals for rot. Replace any damaged pieces. Wood decks, fences, railings, trellises, pergolas, and other outdoor structures will last longer if they’re stained or resealed every year or two.

10. Clean Patio Furniture

Outdoor furniture can get really dirty over the winter months, and now is the time to clean it!

11. Tune-Up Lawn Tools

Sharp tools get the job done. Take your lawn mower and clippers in for sharpening and tuneup before you begin work in your garden.
